Aoun to obstruct the presidential elections

Former MP Fares Soueid told NOW Lebanon that the results of the Annapolis Conference will not have any effect on the future of MP Michel Aoun’s political career, but it will impact Hezbollah and its relation with other Lebanese factions.

“I fear that Hezbollah might pay the same price the Christians paid in 1992,” Soueid said, referring to the marginalization of Christians.

Soueid accused Syria and Hezbollah of using Aoun as a cover to obstruct the holding of the presidential elections.

“Aoun, whether on purpose or not, is providing a cover for Hezbollah, who is hampering the elections according to Iranian orders,” he added.

According to Soueid, nothing will result from the threats posed by some pro-Syrians to amend the Taif Accord.

Soueid also stressed Bkirki’s historical role in the political life and participation of Lebanese Christians for the past 1,400 years. “Bkirki will always play this role,” Soueid said, referring to Aoun’s statement where he declared himself the political ‘Patriarch’ of Christians.

“After the departure of former President Emile Lahoud from Baabda, the majority has proven its capacity to elect a president at any moment,” he declared.

According to Soueid, consensus means an agreement over opening the parliament’s doors so that MPs can choose a president from the list of candidates that includes Aoun.

“The agreement is no longer over the president’s name, but over electing one according to constitutional procedures,” Soueid noted.

“Hezbollah must know that only the state can protect it and not its regional alliances, for in the event of a compromise by Iran or Syria, Hezbollah will pay the price,” he added.
