Geagea: We have scored a point, but the game is not over
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that the departure of former President Emile Lahoud from Baabda was an important step, even though a new president has not been elected.
“It is true that we have scored a point, but the game is not over,” Geagea told the French weekly Le Figaro.
“Neither the opposition nor March 14 has achieved the election of a new president. Both parties still will not choose a consensus candidate,” he added.
Geagea said that March 14 has chosen not to elect a president with a simple majority because they do not want to give the opposition justification for a reaction.
“Two months ago it was unthinkable to see the see a French delegation visiting Teheran or Damascus participating in the Annapolis Conference,” said Geagea.
“Are we witnessing the disappearance of the Syrian-Iranian axis?” asked Geagea. “What would the price of a deal with Damascus be?” he added.
Geagea declared that the Lebanese Forces are not trying to rebuild their military capabilities. “In case of internal unrest, we trust the Lebanese army’s capacity to safeguard security,” he added.
