Kouchner: I expect a new president will be elected soon

 

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner warned of threatening a constitutional vacuum in Lebanon now that the presidential office is empty.

 

“Lebanon is not in a state of chaos today,” said Kouchner. “I do hope that a new president will be elected very soon,” he added.

 

Kouchner reiterated France’s support to Lebanon. “France is committed to assisting Lebanon respect the constitution and preserve security and stability,” he told the French weekly Le Figaro.

 

“The international community is more and more ready to support the goodwill of the Lebanese people,” he added.

 

Kouchner stressed on the importance of Lebanon’s stability and that of the whole Middle East, and the need to have stable relations with Syria based on mutual respect.

 

He also stressed on the need to guarantee the security of Israel’s northern border with Lebanon and

participation in the peace process in the region.
