Geagea: Regional and international considerations must be put aside

Lebanese Forces leader, Samir Geagea, said that the solution to the presidential crisis lies in the participation of all parliamentary blocs in an electoral session aimed at selecting a new head-of-state.

Geagea said that regional and international considerations must be put aside, noting especially the need to avoid linking the presidential elections to the results of the Annapolis conference.

“The solution lies in the participation of MPs in the presidential session. We will not tolerate a vacuum,” he added.

Referring to talk about the candidacy of army commander General Michel Suleiman, Geagea said that the Lebanese Forces reject constitutional amendments.

“Any solution, however, could be possible,” Geagea noted. “What matters is the election of a new president,” he said, without ruling out the notion of a simple-majority option.

“March 14’s demand is the election of a new president. What does March 8 want?” he asked.

Geagea confirmed that March 14 forces are still in agreement and that no divergence among points of view exists between himself and MP Walid Jumblatt.
