UN Security Council president receives Brammertz’ report today
The UN secretary general’s spokesman, Farhan Haqq, said that Indonesia’s permanent representative to the UN, Marty Natalegawa – whose country presides over the Security Council this month – will receive the eighth report from the International Investigation Commission on the assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri.
“Judge Serge Brammertz will arrive tomorrow at the UN headquarters in New York, and in December the report will be discussed by the UN Security Council,” said Haqq.
Commenting on rumors that four suspects will be named in Brammertz’ report, Haqq said that the UN does not comment on reports before they are released.
“This is probably speculation or analysis by the Lebanese press,” he added.
Yesterday, the Lebanese daily As-Safir wrote that the Brammertz report will name four suspects involved in Hariri’s assassination.
The submittal of the report was delayed pending the Annapolis conference, which UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is participating in.
“It is obvious that the US does not want any information leaks at the conference,” a UN spokesperson said.
Brammertz has been appointed as general prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and will be succeeded by Canada’s Judge Daniel Bellemare.
Bellemare will act as investigating judge and later, as prosecutor for the Special Tribunal.
