MP Zahra: The continuation of the vacuum cannot be tolerated
MP Antoine Zahra of the Lebanese Forces said that presidential elections are pending additional consultations.
“Everyone is waiting for the results of the secret meetings that are being carried out,” he said.
Zahra ruled out the election of a president on November 30. “The parliament has been constantly convening since the 10 days before the end of former President Emile Lahoud’s term,” he noted.
“As soon as an agreement is reached, it will be possible to hold a presidential session,” said Zahra. He said the country needs to elect a new president urgently, as a continuation of the vacuum cannot be tolerated.
Commenting on the Rabieh consultations, Zahra said that it will not lead to results because it is based on a weak platform.
MP Michel Aoun had called on Christian leaders to meet with him at Rabieh for consultations over the situation and the latest developments.
Zahra ruled out the Annapolis Conference having any immediate influence on the situation in Lebanon, especially the presidential elections.
“The Annapolis Conference will launch long-term negotiations, therefore, its results will not be immediate,” he said.
“Yet, there could be some negative effects, since some are linking the conference’s results to the Lebanese situation,” Zahra added.
