PM Siniora: General Sleiman’s candidacy must be seriously considered
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said that the election of a new president must be dealt with seriously, especially the candidacy of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman.
Siniora said that after the failure to elect a president within the constitutional timeframe, constitutional amendments are being reconsidered.
He also noted that Security Council Resolution 1701 did not mention Hezbollah’s disarmament, “nor did Resolution 1559,” Siniora told the Korean news agency Yonhap.
“We have always stressed on the need to recognize the authority of the state, which has the duty to ensure the well being of all Lebanese in addition to security and stability,” he added.
Siniora noted that disarming Hezbollah cannot be done by force, but through rational dialogue.
