Geagea: Iran makes the ultimate decision on the presidency

 

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea ruled out the possibility of positive results coming from the meeting between Speaker Nabih Berri and MP Saad Hariri, because Iran makes the ultimate decision on the presidency, he said.

 

Geagea said Lebanon has a Christian façade that Iran is manipulating in a power play. “The presidential elections should have been a Lebanese concern,” Geagea said. “But it has been discussed in light of regional and international matters,” he added.

 

Geagea stressed on the need to elect a president without putting obstacles in his way. He also expressed his fears that MP Michel Aoun is being used as a cover.

 

“Why negotiate with him and not directly with the concerned faction?” Geagea asked, referring to Hezbollah.

 

He also expressed concern over intentional obstructions aimed at hampering the elections. “March 14 has done its best to facilitate the holding of the elections. All MPs should participate in electing the new president.”

 

“We have swallowed a bitter pill by amending the constitution and preserving the ‘tradition’ of military persons in the presidency,” he added.

 

“Once March 14 agreed on Sleiman’s candidacy, the opposition started imposing conditions on the government,” Geagea said.

 

“History will point at those who are responsible for obstructions,” he added.
