Nassib Lahoud calls for constitutional amendment
The National Bloc party on Thursday accused Iran and Syria”s allies in Lebanon of obstructing solutions and hampering the election of a new president. The party rejected “political blackmail,” which it said will open the door to unlimited compromises.
“After the March 14 Forces accepted the candidacy of commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Michel Suleiman, the opposition demanded an agreement over the prime minister, the government, the next army commander and other pending issues,” the party said in a statement after its weekly meeting.
The bloc considered that whatever agreement is reached over the procedure to amend the Constitution, it will be a violation to the Constitution.
Former MP Nassib Lahoud expressed Thursday his hope that political factions join efforts and withdraw their reservations over a constitutional amendment so that a new president can be elected “as soon as possible.”
“It is not acceptable to discuss political demands after we have reached the status of vacuum,” Lahoud said. He also said the nomination of the head of the Lebanese Armed Forces, General Michel Suleiman, for president must not be overloaded with pre-conditions so that he can launch a dialogue between the opposition and the ruling March 14 Forces.
