Michel Mouawad: Hezbollah’s separate state will fill the prolonged vacuum
Michel Mouawad of the March 14 alliance said that agreeing over the candidacy of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman was a great sacrifice by the majority.
“March 14 has sacrificed its two candidates, MP Boutros Harb and former MP Nassib Lahoud, its constitutional right to elect a president with a simple majority, and its objection to a constitutional amendment,” Mouawad said after meeting with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir.
He also noted that the opposition has been criticizing March 14 over supporting General Sleiman. “We have agreed on his candidacy because we are aware of the danger of the presidential vacuum,” Mouawad noted.
“If the vacuum is prolonged, Hezbollah’s separate state and militias will fill the vacuum,” he declared.
Mouawad said that vacuum is a danger to Christians in Lebanon, for some have already started calling for reconsideration of the Taif Accord, which would be a big loss for Christians.
“March 14 will not accept pre-conditions before the election of a new president,” he declared.
