Fares Soueid: Aoun is the exception to the general political agreement

MP Fares Soueid said that General Michel Sleiman must not have to bear pre-conditions, and he should have the support of all Lebanese factions to facilitate his election as president.

“The Taif Accord is the guarantee to all Lebanese,” said Soueid. “As for Christians, their guarantee is their history in Lebanon, and they do not need anyone to defend them,” he added.

Soueid also noted conflicting news reports over feuding parties reaching an agreement over Sleiman’s election.

“We support Sleiman, for he does not belong to any of the feuding parties,” Soueid declared.

He also called on factions to abide by institutional procedures after Sleiman’s election to decide on pending problems. “Let us go through parliamentary consultations to decide on the coming prime minister,” Soueid said.

“There seems to be a general political agreement between March 14 forces and probably Speaker Nabih Berri and his allies. The only exception is MP Michel Aoun, who is still clinging to outdated political demands,” Soueid noted.

“We should not blame Aoun. He might have been the victim of his partners in the opposition who have used him to achieve certain goals in negotiations with the majority,” Soueid declared.
