MP Hariri: The debate over the government’s legitimacy is futile

MP Saad Hariri, head of the Future Movement, told the Lebanese daily As-Safir that the call to suspend Article 40 of the constitution is meaningless.

“The decision to suspend the constitution must definitely pass the government,” Hariri said.

He also noted that March 14 has accepted the constitutional amendment in order to find a solution to the present crisis.

“Unfortunately, other factions did not appreciate our stance. We have accepted the constitutional amendment, but we will not allow its violation,” Hariri declared.

Hariri also said the debate over the legitimacy of the government is futile because it administered two by-elections and ministerial appointments. He added that the resigned ministers have been selectively conducting their activities.

“For the record, the only minister who has committed himself to his resignation is Minister Mohammed Fneish,” Hariri said.

He also declared that MP Michel Aoun’s demands are the concern of his allies in the opposition.

Hariri noted his good relation with General Michel Sleiman and reiterated March 14 MPs readiness to sign the legal petition calling for a constitutional amendment.
