MP Jumblatt: Accepting compromise does not mean surrender or defeat

MP Walid Jumblatt, head of the Democratic Gathering bloc, said that accepting a compromise does not mean surrender or defeat.

“It is not a drawback, as some are calling it. It is rather a step forward and a pre-emptive measure against attempts to hamper democracy and civil peace,” he said.

Jumblatt told the weekly Al-Anbaa that any deal that does not take into consideration March 14’s principles and achievements is treason.

He also brought up March 14’s struggles related to the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. “This tribunal will bring truth and justice to all March 14 martyrs,” Jumblatt said.

He criticized those calling for the suspension of the constitution by saying that they should have called for the implementation of the Taif Accord, including, among other issues, the establishment of a congress that would preserve the national power balance among religious sects.

“This issue should be debated as soon as a new president is elected,” Jumblatt concluded.
