Gemayel Calls for Government Role in Amending the Constitution

Ex-President Amin Gemayel said on Monday article 49 of the constitution cannot be amended without a government role, stressing that consensus on electing Gen. Michel Suleiman president should also give the government the right to take part in the amendment.

 

Gemayel made the remark to a joint meeting of the Phalange Party”s politburo and central council.

 

“I see no possibility for amending any clauses of article 49 without a role played by the government. I believe that consensus achieved on Gen. Suleiman should also be consensus that gives the government the right to take part in the amendment process to avoid any libeling of the procedure,” Gemayel said.

 

He called for quick end to the presidential vacuum, by electing Gen. Suleiman president.
