Lebanese Forces leader says the only solutions left are the most extreme ones

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that the only solutions left to the present crisis are the most extreme ones.

Geagea, who received a Lebanese Forces delegation from Jbeil, noted that March 14 has accepted a constitutional amendment in order to end the ongoing presidential vacuum.

“We came to the conclusion that some parties are seeking to prolong the vacuum, and this required us to take necessary steps to prevent it,” he said.

“The constitutional amendment was the bitter pill we had to swallow to avoid a vacuum,” Geagea declared.

He also said that in spite of the majority’s sacrifices, the opposition has been putting obstacles in the way of Sleiman’s election despite its initial approval of him. “We are convinced that they do not want the presidential elections to be held,” he added.

“On the one hand, they are calling for an agreement over the procedure to amend the constitution as stipulated in articles 76 and 77 of the constitution, but on the other hand, they say the government is not legitimate, though they have recognized some of its decisions,” Geagea said.

Geagea brought up MP Michel Aoun’s call to limit the mandate of the coming president to two years. “Can you reinforce the president’s position by binding him to the FPM and Hezbollah Memorandum of Understanding or by agreeing on a pro-Syrian prime minister?” Geagea asked.

He also noted that some Christian factions are being used as a bargaining card by Syria and Iran in the debate over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and Iran’s nuclear problem.
