Geagea for Expanding the Saniora Government

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea cautioned Wednesday that Syria is seeking to control Lebanon once again, calling for expanding the government if efforts to block presidential elections persisted.

 

Geagea, in an interview with the BBC, said the issue at present is how to elect a president and not how to form a cabinet.

 

Prime Minister Fouad Saniora”s majority government, according to Geagea, would adopt a bill amending the constitution to allow the election of Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman president and refer it to parliament for deliberation and possible ratification.

 

“Then, we”ll see if Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri would shoulder his responsibility. No other move would push Berri to do just that,” Geagea noted.

 

He said that if presidential void persisted for a long time, the government structure should be expanded.
