MP Michel Aoun: It is normal for Syria’s stance to be closer to the opposition’s

MP Michel Aoun held a press conference after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting at Rabieh.

Aoun addressed holiday greetings to all Lebanese and expressed hope that next year’s holidays take place under better circumstances.

“Nothing important has happened in the past few days, except the pro-government party’s rejection to negotiate with us, which reflects their will to prolong the vacuum,” Aoun said.

Yet, he pointed at the drawback of the French initiative. “It is as if we are entering a new phase,” he said.

He also said that a presidential session will not be held tomorrow because no agreement has yet been reached.

Aoun said that it is impossible for the pro-government party to elect a president with a simple-majority quorum.

“A simple-majority elected president is impossible for the pro-government party,” Aoun added.

He reiterated the opposition’s will to make efforts to reach a solution that will not lead to a new problem.

He also noted the state of instability within the pro-government party.

According to Aoun, it is normal for the Syrian position to be closer to the opposition’s because the latter is calling for an understanding with Damascus.

Commenting on the accusations against the FPM for proposing pre-conditions, Aoun said, “We are not putting forth conditions but calling for the restoration of rights ignored by this government and its predecessors.”

He noted the negative influence of foreign powers meddling in Lebanon. “Once foreign powers stop interfering in Lebanon, we will be able to reach an agreement over the presidency,” Aoun declared.
