MP Robert Ghanem: Constitutional ammendment preserving the function of the state

MP Robert Ghanem expressed his regret over increasing political tensions a few days ahead of the presidential-election session set for Saturday, December 29.

“This will blow any chance of electing a president during this session,” Ghanem said.

“The renewal of accusations and low-brow speeches is increasing the frustration of all Lebanese,” he said.

“Some politicians were expected to be more aware and to seek a consensus solution aimed at electing General Sleiman as president, instead of pushing things in the opposite direction.”

He also said that the government’s measures to amend Article 49 of the constitution are aimed at ending the presidential vacuum and preserving the functioning of the state.

“I hope the constitution will not be used as a field to settle political scores,” Ghanem said.

He also stressed on the parliament’s role in safeguarding the constitution and its implementation.

Ghanem said that Article 49 is clear in preventing grade-one civil servants for running for president unless they

resign from their office two years ahead of the presidential elections.
