MP Henri Helou: The government’s measures are aimed at facilitating the election of General Sleiman

 

MP Henri Helou of the Democratic Gathering said that the Lebanese are no longer fooled by some people’s political maneuvering.

 

He also said that those calling for an end to the marginalization of Christians – a reference to MP Michel Aoun – should head to the parliament and elect Army Commander General Michel Sleiman as president to facilitate the establishment of a new government in which he would have a share.

 

“The government’s measures are aimed at facilitating the election of General Sleiman and not to take over the presidential authorities,” Helou said.

 

He also accused the opposition of seeking to prolong the vacuum as ordered by Syria and Iran.

 

Helou expressed his regret that religion is being involved in politics. “The savior is the one who was born in Bethlehem, and not the one closing the parliament’s door, and eroding parliamentary and constitutional life in the country,” he said, referring to Sheikh Hassan Al-Masri’s statement comparing Speaker Berri to the Virgin Mary. Masri had also called on Maronite Bishop Rahi to keep his mouth shut over constitutional matters.
