Former MP Fares Soueid: Vacuum is a danger to Christians and to Lebanon
Former MP Fares Soueid said that the French initiative aimed at facilitating the presidential elections was blocked by Syria.
“It was expected that the French would reveal those responsible for the obstruction,” he added.
Soueid noted that the international community, especially the US, France and the Europeans, insist on holding the presidential elections.
“Arab efforts are being conducted in parallel to international ones in order to pressure Syria in this regard,”
Soueid told the Voice of Lebanon radio station.
He also said that given the present circumstances, the crisis might be prolonged. “But Lebanon is the country where surprises can happen at any time.”
Soueid said that March 14 will make efforts to ensure the election of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman as president, because a vacuum is not only a danger to Christians, but to Lebanon, and it is an Arab and international concern.
He also said that the Annapolis Conference revealed that Syria and Iran are alike, and that no rapprochement was established between the US and France.
“The recent statements of Syrian and Iranian officials reflect the intention of the Syrian regime to obstruct the presidential elections in Lebanon unless they get a chance to negotiate with the US to counter the Special Tribunal for Lebanon,” he added.
