As-Seyassah: Geagea for president if Sleiman’s candidacy is blocked

 

The Kuwaiti daily As-Seyassah quoted a Christian March 14 MP as saying that an EU envoy is set to visit Lebanon and forward a European-US proposal that suggests Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea for president in case the majority reaches a dead-end with the candidacy of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman.

 

“According to US, Paris, Riyadh and Cairo, Sleiman’s candidacy seems to be rejected by Syria and Teheran, for he controls a military capacity which could turn against their interests in Lebanon and prevent them from achieving their plans to bring the country under foreign tutelage,” the daily said.

 

The Lebanese MP told the daily that a European ambassador informed him of the EU’s readiness to dispatch an envoy to Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir and March 14 leaders to discuss this option.

 

The EU ambassador said that LF leader Samir Geagea is the only candidate capable of facing up to Syrian-Iranian plots and their arms in Lebanon.

 

“The EU envoy will try to convince General Sleiman, in case his candidacy is blocked by the opposition, to support Geagea for president,” the daily said.

 

“If an agreement is reached with March 14 and the Maronite Patriarch over Geagea’s candidacy, a US envoy will visit Lebanon to confirm the deal and discuss details,” it added.
