Sayyed Ali Al-Amin: The opposition supports the vacuum

Shia cleric Sayyed Ali Al-Amin, the mufti of Tyre and Mount Amel, said that the situation in Lebanon has devolved from paralysis to total collapse, because the Lebanese parliament is not fulfilling its legislative duties and is not monitoring the constitution.

“Speaker Nabih Berri did not have the capacities to negotiate, and he was acting on behalf of Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement,” Amin said.

“After MP Michel Aoun discovered that Berri will not endorse his presidential candidacy, the latter was no longer commissioned to negotiate on behalf of the opposition,” he added.

According to Amin, the only way out of the crisis is for the state to continue functioning and for the return of all politicians to the parliament.

“The opposition’s rejection of a constitutional amendment reveals its intention to prolong the vacuum, and it reveals how much Hezbollah and Amal are taking advantage of the state.”

Amin said that the only choice for the Shia is to respect the government.

“The Shia did not commission anyone to drive them out of power. Any party has the right to abandon the state but does not have the right to abandon it in the name of the religion, or to monopolize decisions in a religion’s name,” Amin added, referring to Hezbollah’s monopolization of the Shia political persuasion.
