Samir Geagea: Hezbollah is seeking Syria’s return

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that March 8 is intentionally trying to obstruct the elections in order to restore Syrian influence over Lebanon.

“Hezbollah wants to revive the Syrian umbrella over Lebanon because he has a plan that needs a cover. Hezbollah’s plans stretch from Morocco to Pakistan,” Geagea told New TV.

He also said that Hezbollah’s concerns, unlike those of the government, are not restricted to the Lebanese people.

“Unfortunately, some Lebanese factions do not see things as such,” he added.

“If a president is not elected within two weeks, I will suggest the election of a president with a simple majority and will start lobbying to that end within the LF and other circles,” Geagea said.

He also said that the government’s decisions to preserve the functioning of the state are not aimed at taking over presidential authorities.

“There are many Shia figures who are willing to fill the void in the government,” Geagea said, but he refused to reveal their names for security reasons.

Geagea said that March 8’s decision to name MP Michel Aoun as its negotiator was not a good one. “We know that once things demand serious discussions, it is Berri who does the job.”

“Aoun’s decision lies not in his hand but in his appetite,” he added.

Geagea acknowledged that the opposition has succeeded in sending a series of threats “which resulted in halting many of our movements and decisions.”

He also reiterated his support of Sleiman’s presidential candidacy. “As long as there is a one percent hope of electing Sleiman, we will keep on supporting his candidacy,” Geagea said.

“Unfortunately, no session will take place on Saturday. Yet, we will keep trying,” he added.
