MP Boutros Harb: The opposition is trying to strip the president of his powers

 

MP Boutros Harb noted that the core of the present problem is not the presidency but the political system in Lebanon and the role of Christians in power.

 

“The opposition’s suggestions over the election of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman, after a political agreement has been reached in this regard, are restricted to amending the constitution and therefore thwarting the content of the Taif Agreement,” Harb said during his visit to Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir.

 

He also expressed his fears that the opposition is driving Lebanon into the unknown under the pretext of developing the political system.

 

“This will be over the participation of Christians in power,” he added.

 

“The opposition is seeking to strip the president of his powers,” Harb said.

 

He also called for respect of the constitution and the election of General Sleiman. “Is it acceptable that Lebanon remains without a president?” asked Harb.
