Ghanaian UNIFIL unit reaches out to community

The Ghana contingent serving as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has launched a series of courses to teach the English-language and computer skills to youth in the village of Beit Leef.

 

“We are committed to making the lives of Southerners easier and giving them better opportunities to learn,” Ghanaian commander Francis Ophry said on Friday.

 

He added that his contingent would be giving out desktop computers for schools in its area of operations, as well as providing healthcare services, 

 

The Ghanaians also hosted a ceremony at which gifts were distributed to more than 200 children on the occasion of the Christmas season. 

 

Meanwhile, UNIFIL”s South Korean contingent hosted a ceremony at its main headquarters in the village of Tayr Deba on Friday to celebrate the unit”s humanitarian activities.
 

The contingent also hosted an exhibition of photos depicting the “memorable moments Korean troops spent with Southerners,” according to a statement issued by the unit.

 

On Wednesday, a German news agency quoted a Lebanese security source as saying that already tight security measures around bases manned by UNIFIL peacekeepers had seen the institution of even stricter procedures Monday, following a threat issued by Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

 

Bin Laden had slammed Hizbullah for having accepted the expansion of UNIFIL forces in South Lebanon.
