MP Akram Shehayeb: The opposition is serving Syria’s interests

MP Akram Shehayeb of the Democratic Gathering bloc said that the statements of Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem have revealed his intentions.

“There is only one aim: to thwart civil peace and national consensus as a service to the Syrian regime, which is seeking to take over Lebanon,” he told NOW Lebanon.

Shehayeb said that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s Wednesday speech on NBN Television could be summarized as the following: “We want to control the state under the threat of the vacuum.”

He also said that Mouallem’s statements give the impression that he does not want to interfere in Lebanon, yet he is adopting the opposition’s stance until the last detail.

“What is dangerous is that the opposition is calling for Damascus’ demands and is serving them,” Shehayeb said.

Commenting on Nasrallah’s threat to take to the streets after the opposition’s ten-day deadline expires, Shehayeb said that the Hezbollah leader is responsible for any security problems targeting Lebanon and its army.

“We are already hearing voices raising doubts over the army and its command,” he noted.

Shehayeb stressed on the role of the Lebanese army and security forces to preserve stability and security in the event of any moves taken by the opposition.

Commenting on the possibility of some civil servants abiding by March 8’s calls to abstain from following government orders, Shehayeb said that Lebanon is still a country with rules and laws, and that anyone trespassing them will be held accountable.
