Tripoli bloc welcomes Arab foreign ministers’ decision on Lebanon
Tripoli bloc, headed by Public Works Minister Mohammad Safadi, welcomed the decisions made at Sunday’s Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting in Cairo.
“The ministers favorably welcome the consensus surrounding Michel Sleiman’s candidacy for president and call for his immediate election in accordance with the constitution,” a statement read.
Arab foreign ministers also called for an immediate agreement on the formation of a national unity government in Lebanon, constructed in such a way as to deny either faction the right to impose their policies on the other side.
Under the plan, the new president alone would have the right to veto government decisions.
“The Cairo decision confirms Arab commitment and responsibility on Lebanon,” said a Tripoli bloc statement.
The Tripoli bloc statement also expressed hope that Lebanese, regional and international parties will not put obstacles in the way of the Arab solution.
“The Lebanese must abandon the logic of personal shares and interests and facilitate the election of the new president,” the bloc said.
