Gemayel: Arab foreign ministers’ proposal is consensus par excellence

Former President Amin Gemayel expressed his appreciation for Saudi and Egyptian efforts over the presidential crisis in Lebanon, and the role of Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.

“The proposals of the Arab foreign ministers are consensual par excellence,” Gemayel said.

“It will help achieving high national interests reinstate Christian’s roles through constitutional institutions,” he added.

Gemayel noted that the presidential vacuum threatens the role of Christians in Lebanon and that it is no longer acceptable to put prior conditions ahead of the presidential elections.

He also expressed hope that all parties will act positively in response to the solutions presented by the Arab foreign ministers.

“The president must not be burdened with prior conditions, for this contradicts customs and is seen as a coup against the Taif Accord” Gemayel noted.

He also said that reforms, whether on the Christian or national levels, should be discussed after the presidential elections for they will require more time to solve, “whereas, the presidential vacuum is affecting national interests and the authorities of the Christian president.”

“After the failure of efforts to reach a ‘Lebanese’ solution, and in the event of an Arab failure on the presidential crisis, will some push for internationalization, as in 2005-06?” Gemayel asked.
