Geagea Urges MPs to Elect Suleiman on Saturday
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea has called on Lebanese MPs to attend a parliamentary session scheduled for Saturday to elect a new president.
Geagea also denounced the roadside bomb attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers in the town of Rmaileh Tuesday, saying it is neither an “innocent nor an isolated” incident.
It falls in the “general context of the 22 incidents which took place throughout the past three years,” he said.
Two Irish U.N. peacekeepers were slightly wounded in the bombing which targeted their vehicle.
The prominent Christian leader described the Arab three-point plan to resolve Lebanon”s political crisis as “balanced, clear, practical and direct,” urging all parliamentary blocs and factions to attend Saturday”s session to elect a head of state.
“We heard some conversations on some of the Arab initiative”s clauses but at least all factions agree on the first point which calls for electing a new president immediately,” he added.
Geagea accused some Lebanese parties of “taking the presidency as a hostage in return for their benefits and goals.”
Arab Foreign ministers meeting in Cairo over the weekend welcomed the consensus around Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman and called for his immediate election in accordance with the constitution.
