Geagea: The protest aimed at pressuring Arab foreign ministers

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that yesterday’s riots were not about living conditions, as power cuts occur in many different regions.

“The protests spread from Mar Mikhael to the airport highway to the South and the Bekaa,” he told Al-Jazeera television.

“I fear these incidents were aimed at pressuring Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo,” he added.

“Demonstrators were all of a certain age, and this proves the political intention behind this movement, which targeted the army with gunfire. Army troops had to redeploy in certain areas, and this raised some concerns,” he said.

“In the presence of a political decision made by the government and security services, who are watching the situation closely, I have no worries,” Geagea said.

He also expressed his regret that the opposition is threatening to resort to the streets if a political agreement is not reached.

“The Lebanese government and army cannot allow people to aggress each other,” Geagea said.

He also noted the existence of information on some people who played major roles in yesterday’s riots and who are well-known for their affiliation with foreign security services.
