Parant: Suleiman is the Only Presidential Candidate

French charge d”affaires André Parant on Tuesday reiterated France”s support for the Arab Initiative on Lebanon, stressing that Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman remains a consensus candidate for president.
Parant told reporters after talks with parliament Speaker Nabih Berri the security situation is “fragile.”

 

“The situation requires utmost care by all concerned parties … to safeguard stability,” the French diplomat said.

“I believe all parties realize that problems can be solved by dialogue.” He added.

 

In answering a question as to whether Suleiman remains the consensus candidate for president, Parant said: “to my information he is the only candidate accepted by all the political factions.”

 

He said France supports efforts by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa to facilitate implementation of the Arab initiative that calls for the election of Suleiman president.
