Geagea: March 8 Attacks the State to Block the Tribunal
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said Wednesday the Hizbullah-led opposition is targeting state structure to prevent formation of the international tribunal.
“The real motive for repeated attacks by March 8 against the state of Lebanon is to ban the international tribunal, because when the state collapses in Lebanon it would be difficult for the tribunal to proceed,” Geagea told reporters at his residence in Meerab.
However, he noted that the tribunal would be ready by June and its appointed attorney general would be the head of the U.N. investigation team looking into the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes.
“March 8 team does not want presidential elections. They are trying to strip Lebanon of its constitutional institutions … to block the formation of the international tribunal,” Geagea added.
He said “March 8 backed by Syria has taken a final decision to prevent presidential elections. That is why I do not expect any results from the mission of Arab league Secretary General Amr Moussa.”
However, he stressed that the March 14 alliance “would accept any proposal or mechanism forwarded by Moussa.”
