Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said Monday the March 14 coalition had a long way to go to win the “battle” for a “new Lebanon,” accusing the Hizbullah-led opposition of planning to escalate the “offensive against us.”
He also said a rally scheduled for Thursday to commemorate the third anniversary of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri”s assassination would not be the last move.
“Our battle will be long … we are determined to take all measures to attain a new Lebanon,” Geagea added.
He also urged all the Lebanese to head to downtown Beirut on Thursday to prove to the Hizbullah-led opposition and its backer Syria that the people “would not fall into despair.”
“The path to freedom and independence requires a lot of steadfastness,” he told reporters.
The Lebanese forces leader said the Special Tribunal for Lebanon that will try suspects in Hariri”s 2005 assassination and related crimes “would soon materialize.”
“There is a big ghost called the international tribunal that”s why they would escalate their offensive against us and against Lebanon,” Geagea said.
He said the Lebanese have achieved their “independent national decision-making” after March 2005 when estimated 1.5 million people gathered in Martyrs Square to drive Syria out of Lebanon.
“In the past 15 years, any presidential decree or a law…had to go through (the Syrian intelligence headquarters) in Anjar, and then through Syria,” he said, stressing that “now Lebanon has a government that takes its own decisions” free from any meddling.
