Bush Criticizes Iran, Syria, Supports Lebanon and Tribunal
U.S. President George Bush on Tuesday expressed concern over attempts by Syria and Iran to destabilize Lebanon, and pledged support for Lebanon and the “rapid” implementation of the international tribunal.
Bush”s stand was outlined in a letter of support delivered to Saniora by visiting U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Eric S. Edelman who also held separate talks with Defense Minister Elias Murr and Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman.
Arriving two days before the third anniversary of the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, Edelman underscored U.S. support for the democratically-elected Lebanese government.
He discussed with Lebanese officials “plans to strengthen the U.S.-Lebanon bilateral defense relationship begun during his last visit to Lebanon in October, 2007,” a statement said.
Since 2006, the United States has committed 321 million dollars in security assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), and the United States will continue to provide equipment and training to the LAF, the statement noted.
Edelman”s talks emphasized the U.S. “commitment to building the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces,” the statement added.
He was quoted as saying the United States “will continue to support the government of Lebanon and the LAF as they continue their efforts to safeguard the peace, unity and sovereignty of Lebanon.”
In his letter to Saniora, Bush said:
“Dear Mr. Prime Minister:
“I have asked Under Secretary Edelman to deliver personally this message of support to you and all Lebanese people who desire peace and freedom.
“I am deeply concerned about the efforts of some, including Syria, Iran, and their allies, to undermine Lebanon”s democratic institutions through violence and intimidation.
“The United States will not falter in its support for the democratically-elected and legitimate Lebanese Government.
“In this regard, the United States will continue to call for the immediate and unconditional election of a new President in accordance with Lebanon”s constitution, and we will support the democratically-elected parliamentary majority”s efforts to stand firm in the face of pressure to abandon its principles.
“At the same time, we want to work with you to provide visible support to your government and help build the institutions of Lebanese democracy. We will continue to support the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security services and to provide economic and security assistance to the legitimate Government of Lebanon.
“We will maintain our efforts at the United Nations to ensure rapid implementation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Most importantly, we will continue our tangible and diplomatic support for Lebanon”s sovereignty and state institutions.”
