U.N. Back Hariri Tribunal

 

UN chief Ban Ki-moon marked the third anniversary of Hariri”s assassination by reaffirming the world body”s resolve to help Beirut establish the truth and bring those responsible to justice.

 

A UN statement said the secretary general “continues with determination to prepare for the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, convinced that impunity must not prevail and that the tribunal process cannot be reversed.”

 

Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese converged on central Beirut to commemorate Hariri”s slaying and the government declared Thursday a holiday to mark the anniversary, with schools and universities ordered shut.

 

Hariri”s killing along with 22 others in a massive car bombing exactly three years ago sparked international outrage and led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops from the country after a 29-year presence.
