EU ambassador comments on Lebanese crisis

 

After his meeting with former President Amin Gemayel, EU Ambassador to Lebanon Patrick Laurent commented on the need to address “the depth of the current issues in Lebanon,” and not just reach an agreement on a power-sharing formula.

 

Laurent added that Lebanon is in need of “wisdom and common sense” to resolve its issues. “As European negotiators, we are working with EU member states to address the need for a common economic and political vision among the leaders in the country. This vision can be drawn jointly by both sides. What matters in the end is the interest and benefit of Lebanon.”

 

Ambassador Laurent refused to comment on rumors that the EU intended on creating a new initiative with Syria to facilitate the presidential elections in Lebanon.

 

“I have no direct comment on this question, but the EU completely supports the Arab initiative. It is unfortunate that this initiative has not yet achieved progress, but it does not undermine its capacity, and we will continue our support,” Laurent said.
