Abu al-Gheit meets with Lebanese parliamentary majority delegation

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit met with a delegation representing the parliamentary majority in Lebanon, including MPs Samir al-Jisr, Akram Shehayeb, Antoine Zahra, Elias Atallah and Mustafa Hashem.

A press statement released by the Eyptian FM stated that the delegation came to Cairo with the purpose of submitting a memorandum to Abu al-Gheit and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, which emphasized the Lebanese commitment to the Arab initiative.

The memorandum also noted that the Lebanese crisis was part of a crisis threatening the entire region.

Regarding the electoral session scheduled for March 11, the delegation said there were no “positive indications at the moment.” They expressed their hope that the elections would be held in the parliament on the set date.

Lebanon has been without a president since Emile Lahoud stepped down last November. Political feuding between the ruling parliamentary majority and the opposition has led to the paralysis of parliament, and electoral sessions have been postponed 15 times thus far.
