Zahra deems electoral-law debate “Byzantine”

MP Antoine Zahra of the Lebanese Forces said the time had come to overcome the debate around a fair electoral law, which only obstructed the election of a President of the Republic. This issue could not be resolved through media dialogues or challenges, he added.

He called the current disagreement on an electoral law “Byzantine,” and said it would not lead to a result. The Lebanese Forces garnered the support of the vast majority of Christians in Lebanon, Zahra noted.

In an indirect response to opposition leader Sleiman Frangieh’s call for the 1960 electoral law implementation, Zahra said the law was unacceptable in the year 2008 for three reasons. “First, the 1960 did not solely rely on caza. Secondly, the demographic changes which have occurred since then. And thirdly, the Taif Accord.”

In an interview with Radio Lebanon, MP Zahra said the March 14 forces would work to find an electoral formula which all factions agreed on.
