British MP expresses fear that Siniora and Sleiman will be assassinated
The Kuwaiti daily As-Seyassah quoted a British MP as saying he fears that the struggle in Lebanon will reach its peak as the Damascus Summit approaches, especially if Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad realizes that the summit’s results will lead to Syria’s international isolation.
He also expressed his regret that Lebanon, “the only democratic and civilized country in the region,” is paying the price for the Arab-Israeli conflict once more.
He added that Assad might use Lebanon as a detonator to cause a regional explosion through political assassinations, which will lead to the total collapse of the state.
“The state will completely fall apart if Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora or Army Commander General Michel Sleiman is assassinated. Siniora is the last link between the political system and constitutional institutions in Lebanon, while Sleiman is the only consensus candidate for the presidential elections,” the MP said.
“Eliminating Sleiman from political life will lead to the elimination of hope for the Arab initiative and the reemergence of the state,” he added.
The Kuwaiti daily said that the MP read from a list of names of Cedar Revolution martyrs, starting with ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and ending with MP Antoine Ghanem, all marked in red. The names of Siniora and Sleiman were marked in blue.
“They are the last obstacles in the Syrian regime’s way to regaining control over Lebanon. Siniora’s assassination would end the role of the present government, and it will be impossible to establish a new one with the absence of the parliament and the president,” he added.
