Suleiman to Safeguard Taif Spirit and Confront Israeli Attacks
Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman on Monday pledged to guarantee implementation of the Taif accord”s “spirit,” reiterating that his troops would confront any Israeli aggression on Lebanon.
Suleiman made the remarks to a delegation from the Press Club, according to a report distributed by the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
The Army, according to Suleiman, “protects the will of the Lebanese People and their determination to adhere to joint existence. The spirit of the Taif accord has been implemented by the military establishment.”
He noted that the various political factions “adhere to national unity and civic order,” saying it is unlikely that the Lebanese could be lured into civil strife.
He reaffirmed that “any Israeli aggression on Lebanon would be confronted with all available means by the Lebanese army at the southern frontline or in any targeted area.”
The general said he does not take part in discussing political issues “because I”m still in uniform, but I can guarantee implementation of the Taif accord”s spirit, and when they agree I do my best to supervise implementation of the agreement.”
