Harb: Opposition resorts to the policy of disruption and extortion

MP Boutros Harb announced that the drafted document advanced by the March 14 forces on Friday was a step towards dialogue and should restore hope to the Lebanese people perplexed after the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon, whom Harb said desired to live in peace and stability.

In an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio station, the MP reiterated his commitment to the principles of March 14. “For three years we have been working in the March 14 alliance. We developed self-criticism to evaluate our performance and our politics to avoid random responses and the absence of institutions,” he said.

Boutros Harb commented on his observable recent distance from his peers in March 14. “I will not belong to an alliance with no road map for their work. We are a democratic group. I moved away, it is true, but I was not knocked out of March 14, and if I decide to exit I will announce it openly and shamelessly,” Harb continued.

“We cannot build a state on bargains at the expense of the fundamental principles underpinning our system.

The dialogue we began for presidential elections was complicated, and we discovered that the opposition resorted to the policy of disruption and extortion,” said Harb.

Instead, he called for the suspension of dialogue and the return to parliament and revival of constitutional institutions.

“I am in the process of establishing an independent, non-political movement unconfined to a region, sect or denomination,” he added, noting that the movement did not digress from the beliefs of March 14.

The Memorandum of Understanding issued between FPM leader MP General Michel Aoun and Hezbollah had turned into a “Bible or Koran,” he continued. “The most important remained to us is still the disarmament of Hezbollah, which is included in the working paper of March 14.”

In response to a question on the Syrian invitation to the Arab Summit, Harb replied that he was against absenteeism in principle, but that the manner in which the invitation was sent and the date it arrived were not “innocent.”
