Hizbullah Sets Up New Phone Network in Sidon

Hizbullah has reportedly set up a new phone network in the southern port city of Sidon.

The report, carried by the daily Al Mustaqbal, said Hizbullah members took advantage of a Sidon Municipal infrastructure project funded by Japan to install illegal lines in several Sidon districts.

The reports said the network links Sidon with nearby towns east of the city all the way to Jezzine.

It said local residents, who monitored fishy night activity, called up authorities who found out that Hizbullah is setting up a private phone network in the city.

Al Mustaqbal, citing political circles following the issue closely, said the “network is much bigger than we thought.”

They said the network now covers most of Lebanese territory and not just Hizbullah-controlled areas.

The sources slammed the government of Prime Minister Fouad Saniora for not doing anything to stop Hizbullah from setting up the private phone network.

They said Hizbullah penetrated regular phone lines and used underground cables that belong to the telecommunications ministry.

Hizbullah now is able to tap 80 percent of landlines as well as cell phones, according to the sources.

They said Hizbullah”s ability to tap the Grand Serail through the nearby tent city was very high.
