Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya calls for elections without pre-conditions
Al Jamaa Al-Islamiya’s politburo said in a statement that internal stability is the responsibility of all Lebanese and noted that popular movements in Christian regions calling for the election of Army Commander General Sleiman might pressure MPs to elect him as president.
The statement also welcomed Arab and international efforts in support of a Lebanese solution.
It also said that the continual postponement of the presidential-election sessions is leading the Lebanese to believe that MPs are no longer trustworthy and do not represent them.
Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya said that the election of the consensus presidential candidate would lead to the convening of Speaker Nabih Berri’s dialogue.
Conditioning the election to the results of a dialogue will only render things more complicated and will prolong the crisis, the statement continued.
It also called on political parties providing cover to the perpetrators of the Zahle murders to lift the cover off them and help arrest them and bring them to justice.
