Aoun: Visiting Syria is Important to Us

Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun said Wednesday the Hizbullah-led opposition would not settle for anything "less than full participation in ruling the country."

 

Aoun, talking to reporters after a meeting by members of his Change and Reform Bloc, said the opposition also wants what he termed a "fair election law."

 

"Visiting Syria is important to us … and I hope it would happen when conditions permit it," he said.

 

Aoun said the international tribunal that would try suspects in the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes "was part of a plan to block consultations aimed at reaching agreement on a national unity government."

 

He accused the majority of seeking a general elections law that serves its alleged purpose of controlling most the house seats.

 

Aoun said governments, throughout the world, are held responsible for problems faced by societies "except in Lebanon where the opposition is blamed."

 

"The majority wants to control decision-making at a time the opposition is held responsible for any decision without taking part in adopting it," he added.
