Moussa calls for end to vacuum on May 13

 

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa called for an end to “the long period during which Lebanon has been without President of the Republic” on the next scheduled parliamentary session, which Speaker Nabih Berri has set for May 13.

 

Moussa, who heads to Lebanon on Thursday, issued a press release saying that there was an opportunity for understanding on a national-unity government which would be formulated by the elected president. This, he continued, would facilitate parliamentary approval of a new electoral law.

 

Moussa emphasized that any call for dialogue, including that of Speaker Nabih Berri, was “positive,” adding that he hoped to see inter-Lebanese convergence which would pull Lebanon out of the current political impasse.

 

Moussa said he would make use of his participation in the Arab Economic Forum in Beirut this week to hold talks with Lebanese leaders on the implementation of the Arab initiative and discuss the possibility of Berri’s dialogue.
