Gemayel: The opposition does not want Sleiman as president
Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel said that the only way to preserve Lebanon is to adopt the policy of positive neutrality which has protected Lebanon throughout crises in the region.
“We very much appreciate the role Qatar has played in the crisis in Lebanon, and we would like to adopt a policy of positive neutrality similar to the one adopted by Doha,” Gemayel told the Qatari daily Al-Raya.
He also called for not using Lebanon as an open ground for war by everyone and accused the Syrian-Iranian backed opposition of obstructing solutions and blocking the election of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman as president.
“The opposition does not want Sleiman as president, but it does not dare to say it, for he enjoys the support of all Lebanese and the Arab community.”
He also ruled out the election of a president on May 13, saying that the required circumstances are not available yet.
“The initiative of Speaker Nabih Berri has reached a dead end,” Gemayel noted.
He also said that, while Syria is criticizing some for dealing with Israel, it is rushing for dialogues and negotiations with Tel-Aviv.
The timing of MP Walid Jumblatt”s press conference coincided with the UN Security Council session aimed at discussing the implementation of UNSCR 1559 was just a coincidence,” Gemayel declared.
