Chehayeb accuses Hezbollah of obstructing solution to Lebanese crisis
Democratic Gathering bloc member MP Akram Chehayeb said the Hezbollah “mini-state” was a rebellion against the Lebanese state and aimed at disrupting any solution to the political impasse in Lebanon.
After meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abou Al-Gheit, Chehayeb reiterated his support for the Arab initiative as the only serious solution to the political crisis, blaming Hezbollah, Iran and the Syrian regime for the disruption of the Arab solution.
Chehayeb responded to accusations that some parties in Lebanon refused dialogue by saying that the position of the March 14 alliance was “clear.” Chehayeb said Future bloc head MP Saad Hariri had been delegated to conduct talks with Speaker Nabih Berri, setting agreement on the election of a President of the Republic as a prerequisite for dialogue.
MP Chehayeb said the solution to the Lebanese political deadlock could only come about through the Arab initiative and the election of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman as president of the republic. “Therefore the role of Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa continues despite all difficulties,” he added, noting that Moussa knew “who blocked the implementation of the Arab initiative.”
“I think that no one opposes the initiative in Lebanon, but there is a Syrian-Iranian decision to block a solution in Lebanon,” he said.
“I do not think that Syrian President Bashar Assad is seeking to visit Cairo or Riyadh, but is directed towards Tel Aviv,” Chehayeb continued.
