MP Samir Franjieh: Tomorrow’s protest is a cover for Hezbollah
MP Samir Franjieh said that the failure to elect a president in the upcoming parliamentary session is very dangerous because it will open the door to foreign interference.
“I don’t think a president will be elected on May 13,” Franjieh told the Voice of Lebanon radio station.
“What we have heard from MP Michel Aoun is an attempt to take us back to January 23, 2007,” he added, referring to Aoun’s statement at his weekly press conference that there has been an attempt to overlook the general strike planned by the General Workers Union for May 7.
“Riots are prohibited, and the security forces are responsible for controlling riots, not preventing protests,” Aoun said.
“We appeal to employers and workers to demonstrate on May 7 together for the government, which caused the catastrophe in Lebanon, to leave,” he said.
According to Franjieh, tomorrow’s protest is aimed at diverting attention away from the issue of Hezbollah’s network of private landlines and its alleged surveillance of the international airport.
“This time, the Lebanese army and security services will not allow civil unrest similar to what happened in January 2007,” Franjieh said.
“Speaker Nabih Berri will face the moment of truth. Either he succumbs to the opposition’s pressure, or he replies to the call for holding the presidential elections,” Franjieh added.
