Gemayel: Lebanon”s tragedy leaves Persisting Scars
Ex-President Amin Gemayel on Monday said Lebanon is going through "a real tragedy" and expressed solidarity with majority leaders standing fast in areas attacked by Hizbullah.
Gemayel, in remarks to members of the Phalange Party”s leadership, said Lebanon had experienced similar tragedies and "emerged victorious."
"We express our solidarity with all the leaders who are struggling despite the difficult conditions they are going through. They are under some sort of house arrest," Gemayel said, naming Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblat and Mustaqbal Movement leader Saad Hariri.
"We also express solidarity with our people in Beirut, the Mountain and south Lebanon," Gemayel added.
He described the ongoing confrontation as a "crime committed against Lebanon and the Lebanese People."
"The scars of this ordeal would persist for years and years," Gemayel said.
After asking Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah if "this is your honest promise to the Lebanese not to use your weapons against them" Gemayel said "This is a real coup against the constitution and the state. It is a breach of all our traditions."
