On 1st Day as President: Suleiman Invited to U.S., France, Syria
Newly elected President Michel Suleiman has been invited to visit the White House, France and Syria.
A spokesman for U.S. President George Bush said the U.S. leader invited Suleiman to Washington for talks after congratulating him on taking office.
The president invited President Suleiman to come to Washington so the two leaders can meet to discuss issues of strategic importance to both the United States and Lebanon," said national security spokesman Gordon Johndroe.
Bush called Suleiman to congratulate him on becoming president and "reiterated his commitment to the government of Lebanon and to a strong and modern Lebanese Armed Forces."
Meanwhile, Suleiman received an invitation from French President Nicolas Sarkozy to attend a Mediterranean Union Summit on July 13.
Syria has also officially invited Suleiman to visit Damascus "at the earliest possible opportunity." Suleiman has reportedly accepted the invitation.
